Hi,
If the wire in the Tortoise is too large (larger than about .037") excessive stress can be put on the points causing failure.
Another thing to look for is that you can't see any noticeable twisting of the points when the turnout is operated. If the throwbar tie is soldered in place carefully, when the points move it should appear to "sweep" left and right. If any twisting can be seen, over time the solder joints may fail.
