Hello Ron and tim,

I received the Kalmbach book on rail yards and noticed that sometimes the railroads use a yard ladder called a "pinwheel"
Apparently they use a number 6 turnout with a number 5 frog, and curve the exit tracks so the turnout blends more with the yards tracks.

Have either of you ever done something like this? and do you think it could be made into a jig?

I think I have this book also, "North American Railyards"?

Where did you see a reference to a pinwheel yard ladder? Sounds interesting.

I am working on a fixture that will produce two turnouts as close together as possible, this way as many yard tracks can be squeezed together as can be fit. Once the initial two turnouts are built, the assembly is moved down one turnout length and a third turnout added to the ladder, as many turnouts can be added as desired, producing a continuous ladder.

So far this is just theory, but I think it will work. I will need one for my layout, so I will let you know how well it works out.

The reference is in the book North American railyards, look at the yard types you'll see the section about using number 6 turnouts with a number 5 frog, and curved exit rails.

I had the wrong book its MR's guide to freight yards and the page number 31 under ladder tracks.
