Hi Rob,

A double sided jig for different sided rail would work fine, as long as it is the same size turnout on each side as the lengths of different turnouts are not consistent.

There would be little savings in doing this though, the cost of the fixtures is mainly the time required to machine them, especially N scale which require smaller, more fragile cutters and therefore take almost twice the time to machine as larger rail versions.

Guys,

I have just converted my micromill to CNC. Today I found this site, you guys have done what I was thinking about and more. I will probably buy from you guys and save myself heaps of time. I was thinking about my code 40 stuff and how narrow I would need to go, 0.040" is about 1mm which is quite a fine bit and I know how long that would take to machine a jig with it. I upgraded my micromill with a belt drive to increase the rpm just so I can do small bits.
Getting to the point if you have not already thought of it. I cut small gears and as soon as I saw this post I had an idea, what about a rotary form tool? Much stronger than tiny bits, sharp curves could be an issue? Different thickness for different radius or just one narrow one with multiple passes?

I use very thin 1" dia diamond blades for cutting PCB sleepers, another post was about grinding jigs, I just got a diamond surface grinder blade about 2" dia for $30OZ this would be suitable instead of sandpaper based sanding machine. Diamond stuff is getting cheaper everyday and last much longer could be tough on the jigs:)
