Try this for increased strength on those ties on the stock rails.
Take a 1 scale foot width tie, (yes I know its too wide) solder it where the scale width tie would go. Later after the turnout is completed, take a micro file and sand down the extra width to match the scale ties. The tie area under the rail will remain and make for a stronger joint, (especially in the stock rails around the points where the reduced rail base is)

Second tip?
For a smoother throw of the points and one that will not have a tendency to scrape paint or stain from the wood or pc ties try this.

While preparing the point rails: bevel the bottom edges so they curve slightly up, this way the bottom of the point rails will curve, the point rail will ride on this reduced surface area, and the edges will have less tendency of scraping the paint or stain off the ties.
