I have thought of notching the stock rail at the points but so far haven't. Is there anything specific to be aware of? How deep did you go into the railhead?
Thanks for the kind words, it survived the passage of my "most likely to derail" at full speed. I only notch the railhead about the thickness of the remaining rail on the closure rail, which is darn little. I guess I should add here that I file off a little of the inside of the railhead on the closure rail and sort of blend it into the stock rail. Hard to describe, but I take some off the top of the closure rail (a very small amount of rounding down over 1/8") and some of the side of the railhead which remains, resulting in a point about the thickness of the original web of the rail, or slightly less. I only filed the stock railhead for about 1/2" - and actually did it on the belt sander with just an angled touch. Lots of words for what takes about 30 seconds.
