I am building a layout with my son that will be a Delaware & Hudson in the early 60's to 70's era.I am going to by a turnout jig in the #6 or #8.My question is what type of code rail should I use?I know that most model railroaders go for the code 55 and 70 rail for its scale look.Does using this smaller height rail cause any operational problems with rolling stock and engines? Will staying with code 100 rail be the safest thing to do?

My opinion: Code 100 is just too big. Some equipment will have problems with code 55, most will be OK with code 70. There is also code 83, which all equipment should be fine with, and it looks better than code 100.

The key is making sure that the wheels on the equipment meat the NMRA RP-25 standard, unless you're using one of the fine-scale standards. Some older equipment (Rivarossi from the 70's and 80's, for example) used a deeper flange, that won't work on much shorter than code 100.

Thanks Bob, I think I will buy some code 83 rail and check how my older locos work with it.When using the shorter height rail will it cause a problem after years of cleanning?

You shouldn't need to use Bright Boy's or similar abrasive cleaners with current quality rail. Those will scratch and eventually wear down the rail. Those were only really necessary with brass rail. Most modern rail is nickel-silver.

Much better are some of the liquid cleaners. There are lots to choose from, and each has their advocate. And most of them had zero adverse affect on rail.

i agree with bob...
you should avoid abrasive methods of cleaning the railhead.
better with liquid cleaners, alcohol, or tarnish removers (if all else fails ).
