For only 2 DS, I'd take a paper template - glue down the PC ties - use gages and build them up carefully by hand. Use the FastTracks wood tie bases and fix it in place.
You have to do the points last and onto the wooden ties - especially the center crossing points - these must be hinged.
I't will take a bit more time - but with a number of turnouts under your belt - the hand construction (with gages) can be undertaken.
Having someone do them for you is EFFORT and TIME - you would NOT like the charges. (Last ONE I did for someone was $150.00).
I'm seeing what you mean. Had a look at the pricing of the assembly fixtures (around $100), plus the incremental costs of the wood ties, solder, PC Board ties, rail, etc. (I've already got a #8 and #6 point/frog grinding jig), so give or take $120ish for two double slips.
Then I looked at what the Walthers/Shinohara #8 double slips are worth and realizing that they're charging around 60ish US each.
Appears the break even point for the Double Slip switches is down to around 2 turnouts. And yes, your notes about the effort and time is certainly appreciated. Seeing all the grinding to do, I'm thinking it'll be worthwhile just to get the commercial turnouts.
Unless someone has experience with both and can tell me what the differences are between both?
