To be honest, I king of like the way Midwest wood strips look the best. Very clean and finished look. I am building #10 code 55 turnouts using ME rail and Fast Tracks PC ties.

I have got a bit of Micro engineering ties, they appear to be better proportioned than the wood strips Kappler sells, I bought kappler 1/16 by 1/32 strips and they are wider than 1/16 and not as deep as the Micro engineering ties, which means sanding. I didn't expect this, but since I sand my ties anyway to lighten the stain its not too big of a problem. Anyone having similar experiences???
By the way, a sanding sponge is great for sanding tie tops, easier to hold, light application will yield the same results as regular sandpaper, I still have to use sandpaper on the edges thougth.
