In sanding down the stock rail in order for the points to set ok do you have to sand down both rails so the points will meet in the indentation?
Any help would be appreciated. 1st time tring to make turnouts.

Yes - the base of each stock rail needs to be filed out just ahead of the points position up towards the frog for about 10 scale feet or so. (About 2" in HO) Check out the video from FastTracks. Tim recommends the use of a nice belt sander setup - but I've also had god luck with the larger size cut off disks in a Dremel carefully grinding away. Always dress of and debur with a file.

IF and I do mean IF you want actual prototype points with the stock rails actually non-ground out - then you have to carefully prepare the points to slide up onto the base of the stockrails by grind canting the base of the point rails - then you have to build a throwbar much differently than the PC tie bar that is customarily used in handlaid construction - THIS IS AN ADVANCED TECHNIQUE THAT IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEW HANDLAYERS - REQUIRES SOME SKILLS THAT NEEDS LOTS OF EXPERIENCE.
