Fast Tracks

Greetings

I have been looking at purchasing a Fast Track jig to start building turnouts for my layout and just noticed that the double crossover jig could be used to build single turnouts. My question is I need to build single turnouts, single and double crossovers and a wye. Can I use the double crossover jig to build wye turnouts? I am aware that the frog angle is different so couldn't I just purchase a frog/point tool for a wye?

Hi Ron,

The frog angle for a #6 Wye is the same as a #6 turnout and a #6 crossover. The only difference with a double crossover is that there is an additional or secondary frog angle in the crossing section of the crossover. The PointForm tool supplied with a crossover track building kit has an extra set of slots to permit filing for this secondary frog point. I don't know about building a wye using the crossover fixture and wouldn't suggest it unless you want to make several compromises.

I'd be happy to discuss alternatives with you, at your leisure, and can offer suggestions about the best way to proceed.

Terry, I know you can use the double cross over for single turn-outs and single cross-overs, but knowing which parts to use for each would be easier if a diagram on what sections and tie slots to use for each option would be a nice addition to the templates or other support area to download and view. Buying a multipurpose jig saves money but raises the question level.

I know it's off topic, but I find it amusing that it took two guys 2 1/2 days to organise when to make a phone call. I hope you lay track a bit faster than that!
