Think real railroads never remove the base of the stockrail for clearance....

That must have been one huge StockAid tool!

I must say it looks a bit different to the way things are done here in Melbourne. Would anybody be interested in a pic if I make the time to get to a suitable location?

You guys should post this on the handlaid track forum (yahoo) apparently no one believes there's a prototype for it.

Just think of the size file needed to get the stock rails filed down at that size....How long did it take for that handy work.

I've actally got a picture of me using a file large enough to do that job quite quickly. Some call it a file, whilst others simply call it an oxy-cutting torch. :D

I don't know why anyone would think that. There are lots of different designs for switch rail planing and fitting. Removing part of the stock rail foot is common. Here is a scan from BRT4 of 1971:

I should have to look it up in various books, but it looks like "standard continental practice" from memory. Just like the use of 1:9 double slips (and without moveable frog point in such configurations)
