I just tried the Floquil Rail Brown and its horrible. The color is more of an olive green than brown. Secondly, the can spray is too heavy. I won't even attempt this again. I will try to see if Neolube or any chemical blackening agents are out there. What a waste of 4' of rail and PC ties.

Edit: Can't use Neo or Blacken It because they conduct electricity. They'll bridge the gap. This sucks. Totally disappointed in Floquil. What alternatives are left?
The key is to airbrush it (as opposed to the spray can) You can thin it down/mix it/whatever. A single action airbrush is easiest to use.
That being said, I'm really wanting to match atlas flex trak (code 83 HO) tie color, at least initially. Then when I ballast and weather later, it will esentally match. I had been using Model Master Burnt Umber, which is pretty close (real close to shinohara/walthers) to atlas. But I have to agree with Tim (I did not read this beforehand) that the acrylic seems to not stick well to the PC ties. I wanted to stay with water based for easier cleanup and less fumes, but I guess I need to go with oil based.
